Everyone has moles and they can be in different shapes, sizes and color and can be on any part of the body. One can have as many as 40+ moles on their body. The skin mole is a collection of skin pigment that has for some reason concentrated in a particular spot that shows on the skin as a mole. Moles are just a flat colored surface on the skin and they can either be yellow, tan, and brown or black, most moles are brown in color. Some moles can even raise and be like a little bump on the skin. Some moles may have a hair or a couple of hairs growing out of them. Moles can be anywhere on the body including the scalp. Dermatologists have categorized moles that can be recognized as indicating early sign of cancer as A for asymmetry when the two halves of a mole don’t match. B is for border when a mole has an irregular or a jagged border. C is for the color of the mole and the color of the mole is not uniform. D stands for the diameter of the mole and if a mole is bigger then the eraser of a pencil then one may want to get it checked. If one finds a mole with any of the ABCD symptoms then one should immediately show it to their physician.

Most moles start at birth and new ones may appear till the age of twenty however in some people they may even appear later in life. Usually moles are harmless small dark brown colored skin patches and may be smooth, wrinkled, flat or raised. In some people a mole on the face can be quite prominent. In some myths a mole on a particular part of the body was said to be a mark of wealth, beauty, good fortune, etc. one should regularly check their body's to see that there are no new moles appearing on their skin or if any mole starts changing or oozing or becoming painful one should immediately see their physician or dermatologist. The doctor will do a head to foot examination and check each and every inch of a person's skin including the scalp. He or she may also take a skin scraping for a test. Cancerous moles do occur and if one is smart enough to notice a change in a mole and get it checked one can have the mole cancers removed before it spreads.

Moles are generally removed by a physician or a dermatologist by either shaving the mole off or removing the mole and some normal skin from around the mole. Most mole removal procedures are done at a dermatologist's clinic and may or may not require sutures depending on the size of the mole removed. Men get moles removed if they hamper in their shaving or keep getting cut by the razor. Generally people live moles throughout their lives and most moles are harmless. The only care one should take is to use a sunscreen or sun block that has a SPF of at least 15 when going out in the sun as moles tend to darken in sunlight and may at times start itching or burning.

Women use makeup to cover moles if they don’t want them to show. Some women on the other hand may apply a black or brown spot on their cheek to look like a mole to enhance their looks. There are over the counter mole removal creams and medication available but moles generally don’t go away. But yes moles have a life of 50 years and may disappear on their own.
