Corns are hard yellowish white dead layers of skin that have a conical shape with the tip of the cone in side the body generally resting on a nerve and the flat bottom side on top which is visible. Corns generally form on the feet especially on the smaller toes at their joints and under the foot. Corns can also form on the side of the feet. The most common cause of corns is wearing the wrong shoe size or going around bare footed. Women are more prone to getting corns on their toes and under the feet because of wearing high heeled shoes. As the corn rests on a nerve they can become quite painful. In fact a corn can get so painful that a person cannot walk in close fitting shoes and needs to either remove the corn themselves or get a chiropodist or podiatrist as they are known as in America to remove the corn.
The most common way to remove corns is to cover the corn with a corn cap. The corn cap looks like a band aid and has a round padding with a medicated cream in the middle, one is advised to place the medicated portion over the corn and to press the sides down and leave the corn cap on for the number of days written on the corn caps instructions. When using a corn cap the round padding on the edge eases the pressure of the shoe from pressing and hurting the corn. When one removes the corn cap the corn skin is soft and can either be peeled or exfoliated. Deep corns will not get removed with just a single application of a corn cap and will require several applications and removals done continuously before the entire corn comes out. Some corns are big and stubborn and one may not be able to remove them and would need to get professional help to remove them. Chiropodists will soften the corn and use a sander to gently remove the corn or may use a surgical knife to remove the corn. The conical tip of a corn can be buried deep inside the skin and it may even require minor surgery using local anesthesia to remove them.
Corns should be removed as soon as they start to appear as neglect will let them grow and become painful. Because they are generally on the joint of the toe the cone can be embedded between the bones and requires professional care to remove. One can also get shoes to eliminate corns but one only needs these if one has a severe case of corns. Shoes to eliminate corns are designed so that the corns don’t get any pressure on them and therefore are not painful. Scholl's are a well known company that makes shoes to eliminate corns and corn caps and other items for foot care. There is also an invisible corn cap that one can use and this is like a film which one applies with a brush and the film hardens and peels away after some days. Again once the film is off the dead corn skin has softened and can be peeled off or exfoliated.
Corns on the soles of the feet can be extremely painful and one may not be able to walk or put any pressure on the foot that has it. Corns always happen on the feet because of friction with the leather or other material of the shoe. Wearing high heels causes the feet to be pushed to the front of the shoe and puts pressure on the toes while walking. In case one has a corn or corns on their feet it is best that they don’t wear high heels or shoes that are too hard or small. It is preferred that a person should wear open shoes till the corns have been removed. After the corn or corns are removed one must change their shoes and make sure that the shoes one wears are of the correct size and don’t cause any friction on the skin of the feet. Soldiers suffer from corns because of the heavy boots that they wear.
